Responsible Cautions

Using Essential Oils Safely

If you or a member of your family becomes ill, do not diagnose or treat yourself; get proper medical treatment from a qualified health care provider. Then, you may proceed with complementary Aromatherapy to help you or your family member feel better.

The suggestions in this information are for general use. If you are undecided as to which Essential Oil to use, consult a qualified Aromatherapist who will help guide you in the right direction. Remember, Aromatherapy is not to be used to replace proper medical care.

  • Only purchase Essential Oils from a reputable company with independent third-party documentation on purity.
  • Pure, unadulterated Essential Oils will have a smooth, fresh scent; an adulterated Essential Oil will have a sharp note to its scent. Additionally, you can put a few sample drops of your Essential Oils on a blotting paper. Pure Essential Oils will not leave any residue once they have evaporated, whereas petroleum solvents will.
  • All Essential Oil bottles should have a lot number, expiration date, and tamper-proof lid. Lot numbers and batch numbers on each bottle are used to document and assure authenticity.
  • Use only 100% Pure Therapeutic Essential Oils without extenders or chemicals added.
  • Reduce or avoid alcohol after an aromatherapy massage.
  • Those with high blood pressure should avoid Rosemary, Peppermint, Black Pepper, Clove, Thyme, Hyssop, and Sage Essential Oil Singles unless advised by a licensed practitioner.
  • Those with epilepsy should avoid Fennell, Hyssop, and Rosemary Essential Oil Singles unless advised by a licensed practitioner.
  • If you are taking homeopathic remedies, Essential Oil treatments should be given at least an hour apart to prevent them interfering with the homeopathic treatment; this is especially true when using Peppermint, which should be two to three hours apart.
  • Keep Essential Oils out of the eyes. Should any Essential Oil get into the eyes, rinse well with whole milk or vegetable oil to dilute before seeking medical advice.
  • Do not expose to heat, light, or the air. Replacing the cap as soon as you finish using the bottle will help extend the life of your oils.
  • Unnecessary exposure to the air will cause the oils to oxidize and spoil.
  • Pure Essential Oils will state on the bottle that they are 100% Pure Essential Oil of (botanical name).
  • The botanical name on the label is a Latin word for each plant species.
  • Only use high-quality Essential Oils that are identified by the botanical name and give the chemical variety (ct. chemotype) of the oil where appropriate.
  • For example, Thymus vulgaris is the botanical name for Thyme. There are several different chemotypes of Thyme commonly sold. Thyme ct. Thymol contains phenols and is an irritant to the skin and large amounts are liver toxic, which makes it inappropriate for children, the elderly, or those who have liver diseases. The other is Thyme ct. Linalool which is non-toxic, non-irritating, and is very useful for children.

  • Always keep Essential Oils out of the reach of children, with the orifice reducer in place and the lid tightly closed.
  • Use Essential Oils on children only if there are specific instructions on usage and dilution, or under the care and advice of a licensed Practitioner.
  • Even a 5 ml bottle can contain enough Essential Oil for a lethal poisoning if a child were to accidentally drink the bottle. Remember, when plants are distilled, the resulting oil is 100 times more concentrated than the plant material.
  • Do not use Essential Oils orally during pregnancy.
  • If you are considering pregnancy in the near future, do not use Essential Oils internally.
  • Do not use Essential Oils internally during pregnancy.
  • We know that Essential Oils pass through the placenta, and the high concentration of Essential Oil molecules will be difficult for a developing fetus to detoxify as their body systems are not mature or fully functional.
  • During pregnancy use only Essential Oil Blends that are formulated by a licensed Practitioner.
  • During pregnancy always dilute Essential Oil Blends.
  • During pregnancy consult a licensed Practitioner.
  • Do not use Citrus Essential Oils during sunbathing. They are considered to be photo-sensitive, especially Bergamot.
  • If using Citrus Essential Oils in your personal care products, especially on the face, follow with sunblock before going into direct sunlight.
  • Never take Essential Oils by mouth unless under the guidance of a suitably qualified practitioner, working in cooperation with your own doctor.
  • Stick to the recommended doses only. Do not attempt to go above the recommended amounts unless under the guidance of a qualified Aromatherapist or Practitioner.
  • Do not use Peppermint Essential Oil on children under 30 months of age. The menthol can, in rare cases, cause a breathing spasm and cut off the air supply.
  • Not recommended for those suffering from atrial fibrillation for the same reason.
  • If you are taking homeopathic remedies, Essential Oil treatments should be given at least an hour apart to prevent them interfering with the homeopathic treatment; this is especially true when using Peppermint, which should be two to three hours apart.
  • Peppermint stays on your fingers long after you have washed your hands, and you could rub it into your eyes. Always apply Peppermint Essential Oil with the little finger as it is least likely to get into your eye.
